German Shepherds are one of the most intellectual dogs. This breed mostly gets pleasure from stimulants such as squeaky toys, prey, or motion; hence in order to enhance their mental capability German Shepherd dog training techniques predominantly using their prey drive are very essential.
A good dog training method not only helps your dog in becoming physically strong but also helps you connect with your pet better. Our Long Island German Shepherd dog training helps you understand what this intelligent dog is trying to convey to you.
Our German shepherd dog training techniques rely on using a German Shepherds’ natural instinct to motivate and train them. German Shepherds are very high in prey drive; if an untrained German Shepherd was to find itself in the middle of Manhattan without ever being exposed to the busy New York City Streets you more than often would find yourself with your feet in the air trying to contain him or her. It is for this reason that our dog training school provides Manhattan Dog Training like services (we train your dog to respond to your commands in the face of distraction)
Many of our competing dog training schools utilize dog training methods such as: clicker training and positive reinforcement methods only. It is not the use of clicker training and the philosophy of positive reinforcement methods that our Long Island based dog training school takes issue with, it is the use of the word “ONLY” We feel that dog trainers should not limit themselves to few training methods. A perfect example, a dog trainer in Manhattan may need to concentrate more on distraction training, than a Long Island dog trainer, who might need to spend more time on a reliable recall due to the differences in areas.
Our dog training school does not only believe in availing our dog trainers to many methods of training, we also believe it is important to train the member’s (client’s) dog or puppy for the environment that they would be expected to perform in. What good is it for us to train a Manhattan dog to have a reliable 100 yard recall when this dog needs to stay close to the side of his or her master while travelling in the streets of NYC.
This dog would be a candidate for our Manhattan Dog Training Program rather than our more general Long Island Dog Training Service. So, first we take into account what the customer needs and wants, then we devise a program based on the dog or puppy’s breed and personality; in the case of the German Shepherd, we know through years of experience, they respond very quickly to motion and sound (think squeaky toy) as opposed to food. However, we will touch upon the use of clicker training:
Clicker training: This type of training helps your dog connect to the clicker’s sound for a fast prize. Clicker training proves to be very beneficial to puppies and some dogs that have a lower drive. Most dog trainers use clicker training to mark behaviors and let the dog know that a reward is on the way (usually food) for a German Shepherd because we can substitute food with a tug on a toy, a quick pet on the head, and in some instances a toss of a ball or toy
.
Simple rewards training: This concept is a conventional way dog training. Many of our competing Long Island Dog Training Schools employ this method. This is performed by giving your dog appropriate commands every time you want it to move his body. Basically this training is to get the right posture. After every command if the dog’s behavior and posture is approved by the trainer, the dog gets an award. The hitch in this practice is that you have to be very spontaneous in giving the dog the reward for his appropriate behavior else he might correlate the reward with another behavioral gesture.
Given below are certain tips which are to be followed during dog training.
1. Your commands should be easy to understand and short. It is very essential to repeat the same command every now and then so that the dog gets used to it and responds to it accordingly.
2. Your accent, tone and the way you convey your commands play an important role in dog training, especially when training a German Shepherd. If you are training a puppy your words should be soothing and soft, however, if a grown German shepherd is being trained your commands should be firm (DO NOT scream).
Our German Shepherd dog training is not a very difficult task. With the right concept and adequate knowledge it becomes a fun procedure to help your German shepherd learn to perform new commands and tricks, not too mention, behavior better!
Our Long Island dog training program likes to employ a variety of distractions to our dog board and train members. Below is a picture of my German Shepherd with Bailey our latest Long Island dog board and train member…Bailey’s mom wanted to know how the dogs were getting along, I decided to show her!
We are a little more than a week from graduation, so enjoy the video, and most importantly check back soon!
