Penny, a (3) year old Labradoodle, from Massapequa, Long Island decided, of course with the permission of her human parents to enroll into our New York Dog Board and Train Program (which is located in Nassau County, Long Island).

Penny’s problems – Well, for starters, she was a little fearful of new people and pretty scared of dogs. She was not terribly afraid of people, but it would take a little time to warm up. I believe the same was for other dogs.

Penny also liked to pull on the leash during walks, did not like to obey the come command, and was your typical “I am so cute” dog that I can get away with just about anything.

Other than that, she is a wonderful loving, caring, fun to watch dog. She will run around one minute like a puppy – and the next minute you can find her near your feet sprawled out in front of you.

The videos below demonstrate some spill over effects of dog training, as you see her running around in the yard confidently playing with another dog after training. The other video is us training the “PLACE” command using Niko, my Labrador as a distraction.

Enjoy and please check back to see more of Penny’s progress!

This is the fastest Labradoodle this NY Dog Training has seen in a while.

You have made a very wise decision of bringing a Labrador puppy into your life. Labradors are one of the most devoted breeds. However, it becomes very essential to nurture your Labrador dog because they are also known as attention seekers and can sometimes become slightly possessive of their owners.

Therefore, if a Labrador does not get enough attention from its owners it can become a bit unhappy. Hence, our Labrador dog training methods can play a very important role in bringing up a Labrador. Lucky for most owners of Labs, they are food motivated; this means that you are able to use their natural desire for food as a tool to motivate them to perform the correct behavior or to not engage in improper conduct.

Proper Labrador dog training methods help to build a friendly relationship between the owner and the dog. There are a few tips or guidelines which are to be followed while educating your Labrador. It is advisable to train a Labrador when it is a puppy. However it is never too late to follow certain Labrador training methods.

A few things about this breed are to be taken care of while observing our “Labrador dog training methods” which are as follows:

1.	Labradors feel great affection for people. They get offended if they are alone at home all day while you are at your workplace. Labradors need quality time and attention from their owners. However, as many of our New York Dog Training members know, they do NOT need to be pampered.

2.	Labradors can be termed as a very active breed. They were originally bred to retrieve prey after the hunt. They can get affected with various health problems such as obesity if they do not exercise enough. Their boredom can lead to some destructive behavior, also making them anxious and not often but sometimes a bit aggressive.

It becomes very crucial to take your Labrador for your morning jogging exercises or picnics or brisk walking. One of the best exercises for such kind of dogs is to throw the bone meters away from the dog and then train the dog to fetch it for you.

3. Like our recommendations for most dogs, the same hold true for the Labs…..”Firm but Fair.”

Following are the tips applicable to our NY dog training methods.

1.	Spend a sufficient amount of time with your Labrador. Make use of constructive reinforcement during sessions provided in the training.
2.	Make sure you exercise your dog at least twice a day and include training.
3.	If you are going out of town and need to leave your dog home for a prolonged period make sure you hire somebody to take care of the dog and give it company or enroll them in a boarding or daycare program for dogs.
4.	Labradors are a strong breed and need to eat well in order to remain active. Hence make sure that your dog is provided with food at regular intervals. Also see to it that the dog eats healthy food and not junk food every time. And please remember that Labradors are prone, extremely prone to weight game.

Our recommendation is gauge the amounts of food by the day’s activity or lack thereof.

Labrador dog training methods must be followed very strictly in order to enhance adequate nurturing of your Labrador. It is solely because of these Labrador dog training methods that you will be the proud owner of a friendly and social Labrador.

Many pet owners that are not familiar with remote collar training or e collar training automatically view it as punishment. They are under the impression that a remote training collar is used to inflict pain on a dog or puppy that does not comply with the commmand. So, what is e collar training really about?

Like any other dog training device, remote training collars can be misused too. However, when applied correctly e collar training can give your dog and you a really tight bond; this brings you together because your dog will have much more freedom, thus enhancing the time you spend together.

Below is a video that demonstrates a member of a large franchise that primarily is believed to use remote collar training.

Oh, by the way….e collar training is also used to get your puppy or dogs attention.

German Shepherds are one of the most intellectual dogs. This breed mostly gets pleasure from stimulants such as squeaky toys, prey, or motion; hence in order to enhance their mental capability German Shepherd dog training techniques predominantly using their prey drive are very essential.

A good dog training method not only helps your dog in becoming physically strong but also helps you connect with your pet better. Our Long Island German Shepherd dog training helps you understand what this intelligent dog is trying to convey to you.

Our German shepherd dog training techniques rely on using a German Shepherds’ natural instinct to motivate and train them. German Shepherds are very high in prey drive; if an untrained German Shepherd was to find itself in the middle of Manhattan without ever being exposed to the busy New York City Streets you more than often would find yourself with your feet in the air trying to contain him or her. It is for this reason that our dog training school provides Manhattan Dog Training like services (we train your dog to respond to your commands in the face of distraction)

Many of our competing dog training schools utilize dog training methods such as: clicker training and positive reinforcement methods only. It is not the use of clicker training and the philosophy of positive reinforcement methods that our Long Island based dog training school takes issue with, it is the use of the word “ONLY” We feel that dog trainers should not limit themselves to few training methods. A perfect example, a dog trainer in Manhattan may need to concentrate more on distraction training, than a Long Island dog trainer, who might need to spend more time on a reliable recall due to the differences in areas.

Our dog training school does not only believe in availing our dog trainers to many methods of training, we also believe it is important to train the member’s (client’s) dog or puppy for the environment that they would be expected to perform in. What good is it for us to train a Manhattan dog to have a reliable 100 yard recall when this dog needs to stay close to the side of his or her master while travelling in the streets of NYC.

This dog would be a candidate for our Manhattan Dog Training Program rather than our more general Long Island Dog Training Service. So, first we take into account what the customer needs and wants, then we devise a program based on the dog or puppy’s breed and personality; in the case of the German Shepherd, we know through years of experience, they respond very quickly to motion and sound (think squeaky toy) as opposed to food. However, we will touch upon the use of clicker training:

Clicker training: This type of training helps your dog connect to the clicker’s sound for a fast prize. Clicker training proves to be very beneficial to puppies and some dogs that have a lower drive. Most dog trainers use clicker training to mark behaviors and let the dog know that a reward is on the way (usually food) for a German Shepherd because we can substitute food with a tug on a toy, a quick pet on the head, and in some instances a toss of a ball or toy
.
Simple rewards training: This concept is a conventional way dog training. Many of our competing Long Island Dog Training Schools employ this method. This is performed by giving your dog appropriate commands every time you want it to move his body. Basically this training is to get the right posture. After every command if the dog’s behavior and posture is approved by the trainer, the dog gets an award. The hitch in this practice is that you have to be very spontaneous in giving the dog the reward for his appropriate behavior else he might correlate the reward with another behavioral gesture.

Given below are certain tips which are to be followed during dog training.

1.	Your commands should be easy to understand and short. It is very essential to repeat the same command every now and then so that the dog gets used to it and responds to it accordingly.

2.	Your accent, tone and the way you convey your commands play an important role in dog training, especially when training a German Shepherd. If you are training a puppy your words should be soothing and soft, however, if a grown German shepherd is being trained your commands should be firm (DO NOT scream).

Our German Shepherd dog training is not a very difficult task. With the right concept and adequate knowledge it becomes a fun procedure to help your German shepherd learn to perform new commands and tricks, not too mention, behavior better!

We thought we would share some videos of Chloe, a Labrador Retriever, who enrolled in our Dog Board and Train Program. Chloe gave us a run for our money, it is not often that this Long Island Dog Training School inherits a puppy or dog that puts our dog training to the test.

Before showing some of Chloe’s videos, we would like to attempt to paint a picture of Chloe’s (as I write this, I am thinking….there are no words to accurately describe her!) personality. She is a wonderful, charasmatic female chocalate Labrador Retriever that is affectionate, loving, and….uncontrollable!

She will jump through hoops to get to another dog or person, she does so with such gust (think hurricane, tornado, and more importantly….she has no one direction; she literally will jump up, down, sideways, into you, while going around you), and such happiness, she truly loves people!

In our opinion, she makes Marley look like a well trained dog. OK, let’s sum it up. Chloe is a very cute lovable puppy, who turns the heads of just about everyone she meets, she does not have one bad bone in her body, she wants to be pet by all, and wants to play with any puppy or dog. So, what is the problem?

The problem is she doesn’t wait for permission, she just goes, and she goes FAST and HARD. We had to employ and try many combinations of our dog training methods to have a break through with her. First, we needed to gain her attention, because without that (if she is not hearing, she is not listening….big difference); next we had to find out what makes her work….FOOD

Basically, our recipe for Chloe is: Get her attention, and show her the FOOD, but do not give it to her, make her WORK for it! This stimulates her mentally and physically, calming her down enabling her to listen to you better.

Take a look at some of the videos by using this procedure:

The above videos were taken from a dog training session in Wantagh, Long Island’s Cedar Creek Dog Park. Like many other Long Island Dog Trainers, we believe that if you want to train FOR distraction, you MUST train IN distraction.

Well, we haven’t seen it in a while….a run for our money. Chloe, is for sure, one of the toughest our Long Island Dog Training School has seen in a while, in a real while that is.

Chloe’s father (human one, that is) joked with me about reducing the cost, because Chloe was trained to stay while food was being put down in their house. I chuckled a bit, but Rocco, Chloe’s father most certainly had the last laugh as Chloe and I made our exit.

Chloe is an exceptionally high powered canine and people oriented puppy; she goes from 0-60 in less than a second once fixed, which can make training a bit challenging (her trigger signs are not gradual and can be so fast that the handler misses it or catches it too late, easier shown than described).

Our evaluation of Chloe was right, but not accurate; we are not complaining, Dedicated Dog Training is always up for a challenge….we got one!

Our agreement states 2-3 week board and train program, good thing, because needless to say, we are probably heading closer to the three mark. Although, thinking back, Rocco, Chloe’s owner, made a statement to me as I was leaving to the tune of: see you in a couple of weeks….or, if you need a little longer.

At any rate, below is a few videos of Chloe, probably a little less than a week into our board and train program. Stay tuned for more!

Below is a video of what Chloe enjoys doing when she is not in training mode. Most Long Island Dog Trainers that have a board and train program believe in a balanced regime, we are certainly amongst them as you can see.

Had a conversation with a very nice lady the other day via phone. She originally emailed us regarding our Long Island dog training services for her Labradoodle puppy.

I could see that she had done her research on dog training through the internet, friends, family and professionals. She gave me the third degree and was apologetic in and out of our conversation.

She explained that she was unsure of how old a puppy should begin their training; in which I responded that puppies begin learning from the day you take them home, but I though an appropriate age for her to enroll in a puppy training program was 12 weeks and even then the trainers should space apart the visits more than normal.

Then the conversation sweitched to our Long Island Dog Training creudentials, she asked if I was certified by any of the lettered schools, (I will not mention them here, but many were of the correspondence type) I quickly responded NO, I was not.

That concerned her, I know it did, so I encouraged the conversation to continue because I really wanted to clear up what I believe to be a misconception, but at the same time, I did not want her to think that I did not applaud all of her hard work in her research and her sincere concern for her puppy.

I went on to explain that some of the schools were that of a little more than an online type of deal, much like today’s colleges. I also informed her that our Long Island dog training reviews could be found at www.yellowpages.com an independent site, in addition to her viewing our videos results.

This amazingly did not budge or move her away from the certifications. She gave the anology of someone going to see a doctor who had verified claims that was uncertified. At this point of the conversation I did want to tell her: If I were to visit a doctor and that doctor had evidence of results of procedures that he has performed and visual proof, that would mean more to me than a piece of paper that said that he was certifeid to practice.

My childhood friend, has passed the lawyers bar, he holds an ID and ceritification to practice law in the Tri-State area, he ahs all the licenses and is also currently unemployed. He tells me all the time, that he has all the certifications but none of the experience. He said he learned more by clerking for someone.
